Whether it’s been a while since your last dental exam and cleaning, or you’re simply nervous about what to expect at your new dentist’s office, there’s no need to be afraid of your upcoming dental appointment. Here are some useful tips for making your exam and cleaning go smoothly, and why you shouldn’t be afraid of the dentist!

Brush and Floss

While you should be brushing and flossing regularly anyway, be sure to brush and floss before heading to your dental check-up, especially if you just ate. This will save your hygienist some time clearing away food and make it easier for them to get started tackling the tartar on your teeth. It also gives them a better idea of how well you’re doing brushing and flossing.

Don’t Whiten

While you may think that whitening your teeth prior to your cleaning is a good way to show your dental team that you’re taking good care of your smile, this is not a wise idea. First, whitening can make your teeth sensitive, which could cause unnecessary discomfort during your cleaning. Furthermore, it won’t be as effective before your professional cleaning, since your teeth will likely have some tartar buildup blocking their tiny pores.

Write it Down

Do you have any questions or concerns you’d like to bring up with your dentist? Write them down before your appointment so you don’t forget. Sometimes when you’re put on the spot, it can be hard to remember what you wanted to say, and other times you may simply become so distracted with other events that it slips your mind that you even had a question in the first place.

Bring Your Appliances

If you have an orthodontic appliance, bite guard, or wear a denture or partial denture, bring them along to your dental check-up for evaluation. Your dentist can make sure they’re fitting properly and in good condition or even make any necessary adjustments.

Hire a Babysitter

If you have young kids that aren’t accustomed to sitting quietly in one place, it may be easier for you to find someone to take care of them for you while you’re at the dentist. This is not only for their own safety, but also for yours and the safety of everyone else at the dental office. Furthermore, you’ll be a lot more relaxed if you’re not stressing out about what your child is (or isn’t) doing while you’re in the chair!

Remember, your dental appointment is nothing to stress about. In fact, many people find it quite relaxing having time just sitting back and enjoying the change of pace. So don’t be afraid- book your preventive checkup and cleaning today and give yourself a reason to smile!
